Dans un entretien accordé à Farred Zacharia, le 9 août 2009 sur CNN, la secrétaire d’État US, Hillary Clinton, a confirmé ce que ses services niaient jusque là : les États-Unis ont joué un rôle très important dans la pseudo « révolution verte » en Iran et ont fabriqué de faux messages d’Iraniens sur Twitter.
En voici le script :
— Fareed Zakaria : À propos de l’Iran, comme vous le savez, beaucoup de gens disent que le président et vous-même avez été trop lents à condamner ce qui paraît avoir été des élections frauduleuses ; trop lent à offrir un soutien aux gens d’en-bas parce que vous vouliez préserver l’option de négociations avec l’Iran. Pouvez-vous réellement négocier avec l’Iran dans cette situation ? Je comprends, qu’en général, on négocie avec toutes sortes de régimes. mais en pratique, maintenant, avec Ahmadinejad intronisé dans une atmosphère très conflictuelle, n’allez vous pas le légitimer en négociant avec lui ?
— Hillary Clinton : laissez-moi répondre à la première partie de votre question sur notre réaction. Il y avait un autre aspect très important. Nous ne voulions pas nous ne voulions pas nous trouver entre les protestations et manifestations légitimes du peuple iranien et le pouvoir. Et nous savions que si nous intervenions trop tôt, trop fort, l’attention aurait pu basculer et le pouvoir aurait essayé de nous utiliser pour unifier le pays contre les protestataires. C’était une décision difficile à prendre, mais je pense que, rétrospectivement, nous nous en sommes bien sortis. Ceci dit, en coulisses, nous avons beaucoup fait. Comme vous le savez, la jeunesse…, un de nos jeunes du département d’Etat a été twitté « Continuez », malgré le fait qu’ils avaient planifié un arrêt technique. Ainsi nous avons fait beaucoup pour renforcer les protestataires sans nous afficher. Et nous continuons à parler avec et à soutenir l’opposition.
US showed support for Iran protestors : Clinton

WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday that the United States did a lot "behind the scenes" to show support for demonstrators contesting Iran’s disputed presidential election results.
"We did not want to get between the legitimate protests and demonstrations of the Iranian people and the leadership," Clinton said in an interview with CNN broadcast on Sunday.
"And we knew that if we stepped in too soon, too hard… the leadership would try to use us to unify the country against the protestors."
"Now, behind the scenes, we were doing a lot," Clinton said. "We were doing a lot to really empower the protestors without getting in the way. And we’re continuing to speak out and support the opposition."
Clinton was asked about the case of Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist detained in Iran since June 21 on allegations he helped orchestrate protests against the election results that saw Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad returned to power.
The top US diplomat said she was "just appalled at the treatment that Mr Bahari and others are receiving."
She described the trial Bahari faces as "a show trial," saying the process is "a sign of weakness."
"It demonstrates, I think, better than any of us could ever say, that this Iranian leadership is afraid of their own people, and afraid of the truth and the facts coming out," Clinton said.
The secretary of state reiterated that the United States believes it would be "unacceptable" for Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.
"If they believe that this would give them a more secure position, a greater capacity to influence events, to intimidate their neighbors, to expand the reach of their ideology, they were mistaken," she said. "We do not intend to accept nuclear weapons by Iran."
"They need to think again, because they will render their position less secure, they will trigger an arms race in the region, and they will certainly put greater pressure on the United States to extend a defense umbrella in order to hem in and contain them," Clinton warned.
